About Observable
I see data and analytics as a means to an end - a way of uncovering and making better decisions, and continuously improving the world around us. Observable is my attempt to share the insights I've picked up along the way, both in my professional life and beyond.
Here you'll find deep dives into data leadership and analytics strategy, practical advice on building and scaling teams, personal experiences and observations from the real world, and random thoughts that probably shouldn't see daylight.
Why Observable? In data science, an observable is something we can measure and analyze. But more broadly, it's about the practice of noticing - the patterns, connections, and insights that emerge when you look closely enough.
About Me
I'm currently Director of Data at Tines, where I'm helping build a great company with some great people and customers. Before this, I spent nearly a decade at Google and YouTube, working in GTM and Product roles across London, California and Dublin.
Like many in data leadership, my path wasn't obvious - I started with a PhD in Nutrigenomics and published research before finding my way into tech. A decade ago, there was no clear route into data and analytics; most of us arrived here by following our curiosity rather than a career plan. That meandering route has shaped how I think about problems and approach solutions.
Outside of work, I'll admit to being pretty much a tech industry cliché - I live in North Wicklow, make fussy coffee and try to convince myself that occasional sea swims and sporadic BJJ sessions count as a fitness routine. I run a small photography business on the side and, when time permits, dust off my guitars.
The Content
Professional Insights
Articles focused on data leadership, analytics strategy, and building effective teams. These draw from my experiences leading data functions in both large tech companies and high-growth startups.
Personal Observations
Less structured thoughts on technology, leadership, and whatever else seems worth writing about. These might be rougher around the edges, but hopefully still interesting.
